Ephesians 4:29
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building other up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
I struggle a lot with this. Not necessarily gossiping, but participating in negativity. This isn’t helpful talk. This isn’t stuff that should be coming out of my mouth… then why do I say it?
Does it glorify God? No. Does it edify others? no. Does it benefit those who listen? Maybe… if they change what is wrong.
But what is unwholesome? Definitely swearing…. dirty talk, gossiping, but there’s other things too. Complaining? Whining? Things like that too…
There’s a difference between honestly evaluating and seeing some bad stuff and whining. But it’s really easy to fall into whining.
In the end- do my words point to Christ? No. Should they point to Christ? Yes.
Dear God, please help me to glorify you with my words. You have given so much to me on the cross- this unspeakable gift of grace and mercy. You deserve nothing less than everything I have- even that is not near sufficient. Teach me to tame my tongue- that everything I speak may be glorifying to you- edifying others, pointing them to You. Always to You. In Jesus’ name I pray- Amen.
